Only the Human Who Loves Myth Truly Tastes Existence

LucyTake one look at my myspace page and there will be little doubt in your mind of my passion for fairytale and myth. Take one look at my Lord of the Rings action figures collection, which the last time I checked was around 300 figures, and there will be no doubt in your mind that I have an insane and maybe even twisted passion for fairy tales and myth…and rightly so!
The truth is, now that I am getting older I am only now beginning to understand why CS Lewis begins the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe with this dedication to his goddaughter Lucy: “I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”
Lewis, as have many other minds far, far greater than mine, came to understood the true power of fairytale and myth. I now understand myth to be the lungs of humanity. Without fairytales, ours are dismal days till death. Fairytales and myths are more real than reality. “The Value of myth is that it takes all the things you know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by the veil of familiarity” (CS Lewis).
A powerful tale well told speaks to something deep within us that we long to have and know. Every child is driven by the idea that he or she is capable of great and mighty things…every girl in some way or the other desires to be a princess and every boy a courageous warrior. Yet it is more than that; deep down we know that there is more going on than meets the eye. When something grips us and takes us into realms of imagination never trekked we whirl with delight, we feel more alive than ever. So in myth there is a hidden power…a real power that we can only touch when we delve in with a leap. When we drink from the fountains of myth we in fact are drinking in truths that are many times deeper than our own understanding of the universe.
